1962: A Hobby becomes Regular Business
• Renzo Lodi and Loris Turrini, respectively Manufacturing Floor Managers of FIAT Tractors and the Modena Public Transport Agency laid the foundations of what was to become GL Finishing some twenty years later. They decided to take some of their work home with them to boost their respective Company’s profitability and started to repair and overhaul compressed air tools, FIAT Tractors screw fasteners particularly, at their home garage. Repairs were completed over the weekend and tools got back to FIAT workshops on Monday mornings, repaired and overhauled.
• The results of this part-time activity were quite obvious and well appreciated, also because the couple had the idea of repainting all repaired tooling with bright colours so line workers could immediately single them out from all other available tooling. FIAT Tractors soon decided to contract all technical service for their tools to Lodi and Turrini.
1977: Part Time Operations become Official and GL snc is born
After a few year of business under the name of Campana Alfeo, Lodi and Turrini founded GL snc in 1977, the new Company’s name coming from the initials of the surnames of the two founders’ wives: Goldoni and Lodi and that same year FIAT Tractors decide to contract repairs to their painting pumps to the new Company
• Business started to develop and the Company’s list of Customers included leading enterprises such as Ferrari Automotives, Fiat Tractors of Jesi, Landini tractors, all still staunch Customers to date.
• The new Company’s activities were manifold and it moved to more spacious 100 square metre facilities in 1978. Meanwhile, FIAT Tractors decided to contract out to GL all repair activities for its painting facilities. Those same years, the Company started doing business with the multi-national world leader finishing Company of Nordson, which GL becomes the official Service Centre for in the provinces of Modena and Reggio Emilia.
• At end 1979 Renzo Lodi, who had continued with his twofold activities over the years, resigned from FIAT Tractors and started working full-time for GL, followed a year later by Loris Turrini’s son, Roberto, who joined the Company in 1981; GL moved to larger and more satisfactory premises that same year.
• In 1985 Company personnel grew from 2 to 3; Luca Turrini joined his brother and uncle and was followed a few years by Renzo Lodi’s son Vincenzo; as GL became increasingly successful in its repair work business, it developed its interests with Customer Service and greater commercial activity. That same year, it started working jointly with the Company ARO for the organised sales of pumps and with Nordson for Parts and tooling.
1988: GL Finishing srl is born
In 1988 GL snc grew to become GL Finishing srl, with finishing and printing its main business to the extent that Company name and structure were changed as a consequence together with its premises, designed to accommodate a new commercial structure manned by 9 experts.
• GL Finishing became the Authorised Nordson Service Centre for the Italian Regions of Emilia-Romagna, Marche and Veneto with service and original Parts made available to Customer. The first business year closed with 1.13 billion Italian Lire sales.
• GL Finishing’s activities kept on developing the following years and requests for painting installation service added to Customer demands for new equipment to replace older damaged tooling. The Company created a commercial structure dedicated to satisfying demands for Nordson powder and liquid painting products for new Customers.
• The Company’s structure developed even more in 1991, when it dedicated part of its activity to ceramics. • Sales increased twofold in just 3 years, to 2.2 billion Italian Lire.
1997: Development Continues
GL Finishing continued developing and expanding during the latter half of the Nineties. The new Company Logo was created in 1998, with the Company’s core printing business experience and specialisation expressed with the rhomb shaped presentation for a paint gun spray. Its objectives were quite ambitious – become the reference point of industry’s printing activity in general and an opportunity for the Italian automotive business.
• The Company went on growing: in 1999 agreements were reached with Graco and Ingersoll-Rand and GL Finishing closed the year with overall sales of 14 billion Italian Lire. Staff totalled 30 persons, 13 of whom engaged in commercial, 10 in technical and 7 in logistic and administrative operations.
2000: Relax – We’ll Take Care
The new Millennium opened with significant changes for GL Finishing. Its new logotype identifies its new Company view and philosophy, whereby the Customer is the real centre and Destinee of any business venture. Relax – We’ll Take Care: the Customer need no longer worry about anything to do with painting, extrusion and transfer; GL Finishing handle the lot and Customers are free to use their time to make money from their business.
• Premises change too, with a new and welcoming structure designed to offer professional and technologically advanced responses to any requirement. A place not just made up of offices but an area where people can meet and solve problems together. • The Company’s new premises also host the Customer’s Home, a comfortable area where Customers can hold meetings to manage their business and use as a place for representation.
• In 2005, Nordson decided to close their Italian Paint Division and transfer all activities to GL Finishing, as their Official Distributor for Italy.
• In 2006, the Makes officially represented by GL Finishing also include Kremlin Rexson, an important French Company specialising in manufacturing painting equipment components.
• GL Finishing thus implemented its project to enter into partnership with leading worlds fluid management enterprises, to complete ad hoc projects for Customers, with no technological or Trade Mark constraint.
• GL Finishing creates 4 specific internal structures as follows to supply optimum response to all new Customer needs:
» Special Projects
» Plants
» Component Distribution
» Ceramics
as well as two internal Customer support areas:
• An R&D, Technical Management and Assembly Unit
• A Financial Consultancy, Project Study and Adaptability Plant ROI Unit.
2007: Often Absolutely Necessary
GL Finishing’s 20th Anniversary was celebrated with another significant change – once again the new logotype contains the Company’s philosophy.
• Finishing becomes an F in the new logo: the Company no longer deals just with material surface finishing but with all industrial process fluid treatments, namely distribution, sealing, transfer and painting.
• Based on the experience accumulated during its history and always with an eye on Customer needs, the Company’s new objective is to become absolutely necessary for the main Customers on its reference markets.
• Today, GL Finishing srl has 44 operators, including the partners operating inside the structure, with operational responsibilities ranging from General Management and Sales to Administration and Technical Direction. Sales personnel includes single product agents, internal and external salesmen, totalling 24 persons, a Technical Office with 7 persons, 9 people manning Technical Services and the Warehouse and 4 in Administration. As will be noted, the sales side is predominant and all-important for us. Consolidated yearly sales are 10 to 11 Million Euros and our ambition is to double this figure by 2010.
